Kim Kardashian showed up at the 2023 Met Gala dripping with pearls—specifically 50,000 of them crafted into a stunning dress by Schiaparelli. But the gown was clearly v delicate, and unfortunately the bottom of it broke apart on the ground as Kim returned to her hotel after walking the red carpet. But she appears to have handled the situation like a pro per usual, simply continuing on her way inside.
Kim chatted about her dress to Vogue on the red carpet, saying, “I wanted pearls. I thought, What is more Karl? You know, the iconic Chanel pearls is what I always thought of. So we wanted to just be dripping in pearls.” She also said, “This year, I just wanted to feel glamorous. I really didn’t feel the pressure. I just wanted to have a good time. I took a shot before I came with my sisters.”
Kim actually mentioned that some of the pearls had come off on the way to the Met, saying, “Some popped on the way, and I told my daughter to grab them all. They’re real pearls and she was putting them all in her purse.”
Kim also chatted about meeting Karl Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette, saying that it was “a little scary” and took “a little while to warm up to her” but that “she wrote me a sweet note and left it in my room. We spent some time together before this.” Normal stuff!
According to People, Kim’s dress featured 50,000 freshwater pearls and another 16,000 crystal pearls. The entire creation took 12 people 1,000 hours to make.
